Finishing Touch
FC Rahr played its final match of the spring season today, in hopes that they would complete an undefeated season.  It was evident from the beginning that this one would not come easily, as there were only 11 players available for the game.  Rahr opened the scoring with a goal by Jake Bailey on a set piece from about 25 yards.  Shortly thereafter, Dillos scored off a bouncing ball in the box.  It was not too long until the Dillos scored again on a PK to take a 2-1 lead going into the half.

The second half was a roller coaster ride that started with the Dillos scoring on yet another PK to increase their lead to 3-1.  After working the ball down the left side, Joel Hargrave sent a great cross into the box which was finished by a Kyle Wilbur header, pulling Rahr closer at 3-2.  However, the Dillos would get another PK goal which would extend the lead to 4-2.

To make matters even worse for FC Rahr, a player was lost with 30 minutes left in the game, leaving them down a man.  It was this kind of adversity that fueled the squad to battle back into the game.  Bailey scored on another set piece to bring Rahr within one at 4-3.  Then, Rahr found the equalizer when Bailey scored on a PK, given during a Tony Sanchez breakaway.

With only 9 minutes left, it was anyone's game.  It was then that Ian Landrum won a ball in the midfield and bombed a shot from 35 yards out.  Everyone held their breath as it missled through the air.  Finally, it found the left corner of the net, and the keeper had been beat.  In true heroic fashion, Ian Landrum scored the game winner for FC Rahr, as they would go onto victory and an undefeated season!

Landrum was immediately named: Rahr Six Pack Player of the Game.

Win(d)

This week, the wind won.  It was absolutely brutal playing in today's winds, but surprisingly, it was easier playing against it, rather than with it.  In the first half, FC Rahr played with the wind, and created a few mediocre opportunities.  However, Makeshift's chances were a little more substantial, but they never managed to find the net behind Andrew Birkenheuer or Ogewu Agbese.

Ian Landrum played a hard 90 minutes this week and was major factor in our clean sheet.

Early in the second half, Chris Lockwood buried a ball behind the keeper off of a Tommy Barnes assist.  Later, Lockwood worked the ball up the right side, and tallied a second goal on a through ball from Jake Bailey.  Finally, Tony Sanchez netted a great left footed shot on a great pass from Brad Liddle.  Those three goals would hold true, as Rahr kept another clean sheet in a 3-0 victory.

Saved by the Post... Again

Contributed by Kyle Wilbur

FC Rahr took the lead with an early goal by Chris Lockwood set up by a beautiful pass from Kyle Wilbur.  The first half ended with high spirits on the home side, per usual with a one goal lead.  The wind did not play much of a factor this week unlike the past few weekends. Thus,  FC Rahr could maintain possession and control the game, the sort of football we are accustom to playing.

Lockwood added another goal in the middle of the second half with a wonderful strike after realizing the goalie was way out of position.  FC Dubtown scored a goal shortly after on a great shot from outside the eighteen yard box.  As FC Rahr was trying to hold on to the victory, FC Dubtown had two shots ring off the post late in the second half.  Ogewu also made some spectacular saves to ensure that FC Rahr would clinch the division. This was a great game by the entire team and it was a great victory considering the struggles we had against Dubtown in our first match. Congrats to the team for winning 2nd Division!!

One Game Closer

FC Rahr extended their lead to 6 points in Division 2 with a win over The Village today.  It was another close game between the two foes, but this game had a victor.  Rahr scored first midway through the first half when Andrew Birkenheuer made a long throw into the box that was nudged in off of a Matt Baltensperger header.  Once again, the first half ended with FC Rahr on top 1-0.

Matt Baltensperger scored FC Rahr's first goal on a redirected header.

The Village managed to score the equalizer early in the second half in this match.  FC Rahr had time to find a game winner, unlike the last match when The Village scored a last minute goal resulting in a draw.  An unfortunate hand ball in the box against The Village allowed Tony Sanchez to score the game winner on a PK.  Ogewu Agbese held strong as our opponent pelted him with shots throughout the second half.  The Village managed to hit each post, but never could find the back of the net for an equalizer.

Another Win!

FC Rahr was victorious once again in the "Battle of the Beers."  It may not have been our prettiest win, but it still goes in the win column.  Yesterday was a perfect day for football.  It was sunny and warm with hardly any wind at all.  In the first half, FC Rahr struggled to settle into a groove until finally Nate Beck put a half volley into the net from about 18 yards.  Late in the second half, Fat Tire FC put together some great scoring opportunities only to be stonewalled by Ogewu Agbese.

Ogewu Agbese, our rock in the net, has only allowed 5 goals all season, 3 of which were PKs.

The second half was dominated by another gritty performance from our defensive line.  Rahr missed a few golden opportunites to increase their margin, but failed to find the net.  After a grueling 90 minutes, Fat Tire FC did not score the equalizer as FC Rahr won 1-0.  As of now, FC Rahr has given up fewer goals than anyone in the entire FWASA Men's Open League.

2nd Halves

Yesterday, was the tale of two halves for FC Rahr.  The first half started a bit slow and was a constant battle against the wind and a ferocious opponent.  Makeshift came ready to play, and immediately went on the attack.  However, Rahr's rock solid defense managed the onslaught and escaped the first half in a 0-0 tie. (continued below)

Nate scored both goals for FC Rahr yesterday.

In contrast, after a few halftime adjustments FC Rahr started to possess the ball and control the game in the second half.  The return of Chris Lockwood and a little help from the wind turned the game around instantly.  Nate Beck, assisted by Joel Hargrave, scored early in the second half to put FC Rahr on top 1-0.  Quickly afterwards, Makeshift scored the equalizer on a PK to even the score at 1-1.  Later in the second half, Tommy Barnes got a break down the left side and sent a cross into the box that was finished once again by Beck.  As usual, the defensive front maintained the 2-1 margin as FC Rahr was victorious.

Bitter Sweet

FC Rahr picked up another win today, but it came with a price.  Tony Sanchez scored unassisted after battling to get the ball in the box, during the first half.  Once again, Rahr was up 1-0 going into the break.  In the middle of the second half, Jesse Groff scored on a corner that bounced around the box before settling to the ground off of a Matt Baltensperger header.  FC Dubtown scored shortly after that on a broken play back to the keeper, making Jesse's goal the game winner at 2-1.

Jesse scored the eventual game winner for FC Rahr.

Jesse left the game late in the second half after a brutal slide tackle.  As it turns out, he sufferred a broken tibia.  In addition, Carson Hebert broke his fibula while playing with the Fort Worth Rugby team on Saturday.  We are sad to see these guys miss the rest of the season and hope to have them back for the summer.

Jesse is our Rahr Six Pack Player of the Game.

Correction:  Last week's goal was assisted by Joel Hargrave.

It's a Clip-On (Tie)

Yesterday was a grueling bout ending with a 1-1 tie on the score card.  FC Rahr took a 1-0 lead early in the first half off of a cross served by Joel Hargrave and a left footed finish from Jesse Groff.  Battling the wind, and a short bench, the defense held strong for the rest of the first half, shutting out their opponent.  Midway through the second half, Mike Tapia was carted off with a pulled hammy, eliminating the last of our defenders.  It wasn't until the 87th minute that The Village broke down the left wing and scored the equalizer in the top of the net.  FC Rahr gave a great team effort and is being awarded the player of the game as a whole.

Jesse, Rahr's lone scorer, watches on.

PK Central

FC Rahr won a battle in the trenches yesterday.  After giving up 3 PK opportunites, we pulled out a 3-2 victory.  The winds, aided by countless offsides calls, made it difficult to get much going, but our guys hung in there and played a tough game.  There were 2 players of the game this week, Tony Sanchez and Ogewu Agbese, more details here.

Battle of the Beers

FC Rahr opened the season with a solid 4-0 win in the "Battle of the Beers."  Ogewu Agbese did an excellent job keeping a clean sheet in his new flashy yellow keeper's jersey, while the rest of the team performed well on the field.  Goals were scored by Jake Bailey, Brad Liddle, Chris Lockwood and Joel Hargrave.  We are pleased to announce that our first Rahr Six Pack Player of the Game was Chris Lockwood.  Please check our stats page for more details.

Division Champs!
FC Rahr, formerly "The New Team," finished its inaugural season with a commanding 6-0 win.  Their final victory, coupled with an FC Bimbo tie, clinched the division.  Sure, it may not be the World Cup, but it's a great feat for team that played it's very first game just 11 weeks ago!
