Rahr United Float Fat Tire, Lead All-Time in "Battle of the Beers" Series

After a convincing 5-1 win over derby rivals FW Wanderers, Rahr United found themselves in a precarious situation. For the first time in their history, United played without manager Johnny Ferraro.  Luckily they were in good hands as care-taker manager, Prof. Matt Riordan, was the last manager to win Division One.

Other notable abscences from the squad were leading scorer Charlie Schlott and Cedric Goddervrind, who has returned to the District of Columbia after his loan spell ended.

Fat Tire were looking to regain their footing in the "Battle of the Beers" after succumbing to a 5-3 loss against the Brews in the opening game of the season. United themselves were still on the heels of the Arlington Comets, looking to regain their place at the top of the table.

The opening stanza would be short on excitment as neither team created much in the way of scoring chances. Fat Tire exclusively used the long ball to try and catch United, but JP Amick and his brother, the recently-acquired Casey Amick were having none of it.

United would eventyally open the proceedings with what has become the norm from them this season. A spectacular free-kick from the left foot of Chris Lee proved that Rahr United are lethal on the dead ball.  Not to be outdone, "Hot Rod" Gaffoglio would turn from provider to finisher, when he non-chalantly lofted the ball over the opposing keeper.

The tardy Abe Ademola would find United's third win a penalty in the dying minutes of the first half.

Goalkeeper Estevan Cruz would get the call to take the spot kick. The pressure would get to Cruz however as he fluffed his chance, giving the inexperienced Fat Tire keeper an easy save.  True to his English roots, Cruz has not saved a penalty nor scored a penalty this season.

With the rain starting to poor down, United were quick to go back to work. Second half goals from  Martin Cleworth, Mike Ritchey, and JP Amick would secure a 6-1 victory. Man of the match honors were awarded to Prof. Matt Riordan for leading the team to victory while Johnny Ferraro was on a scouting trip in Lubbock and Peru.

In related news, the Arlington Comets narrowly defeated relegation fodder, FC Chaos, 2-1 to keep a one point lead at the top of the table. United will be crossing their fingers that someone can topple the Comets in the last two games of the season.

Comets Collide with Rahr United, Defense and Goals Extinct

Rolling Hills #3 - Not much was known about the Comets from Arlington except they favoured the long ball game and scored a lot of goals. With the Comets trailing United by two points in the table, both squads knew the stakes where high.

United kicked off and enjoyed a decent spell of possession, but were unable to create any definitive chances. Whether it was rust from the long break or World Cup hangover, United just weren't clicking at the right time.  It wouldn't take long for the Comets to find their rhythm and punish United.

Once the Comets got possession, they dumped the ball into United's defensive-third and swarmed like bees.  United's defense was at 6's and 7's when a through-ball got behind and the Comets finished with ease. It wouldn't be too long before they claimed their second. Then a free-kick from the top of the box would find an unmarked man squeaking the ball in for a third.

Determined to make a match of it, United would pull a goal back before the half. United packed the box and created chaos off of a corner.  Martin Cleworth would take advantage of a goal-mouth scramble, and claim his second goal of the season.

It was 3-1 at the half but United were confident that they could rally back. However, with only 14 of their 20 players available, tactical changes were limited.
United pushed for more goals in the second half, leaving themselves vulnerable across the back.

The Comets would take advantage of this and improve their tally to five before United could grab their second.  United would refuse to go down quitely though with Mike Salcedo and Abraham Ademola leading the charge.  Garrett Horvath would grab himself a brace, including an amazing solo effort he finished into the upper 90.

The game would end 7-3 resulting in the Comets leap-frogging Rahr United to the top of the table. United hope to take their loss in stride and come back stronger than before.  With only one point seperating United from first, they have every intention of pushing Comets to the wire.

They will get their chance next Monday in their derby match against the Fort Worth Wanderers.  Rahr United have a long history with Wanderers and this game will likely have fireworks.  Currently Wanderers have the upper hand, as they ran out 4-2 winners in a pre-season friendly last spring.

La Puerta Hermosa Lost In Translation

FWISD #1 -  Rahr United took to the field on the hottest day of the year, in what was expected to be a fiery encounter with the reigning Division 2 champions.

Right off the bat, La Puerta proved they were going to be a stern test.  The Latin team won possession, and refused to give it up easily. When United did win the ball, La Puerta swarmed in numbers to win it back.

The Brews looked like they were in for a long night before forward Charlie Schlott was pulled down roughly 30 yards from goal.

Michael Salcedo stepped up and scored what will definitely be a “Goal of the Season” canidate. The ball, traveling against the wind, looked like it was destined for the parking lot, before it dipped back down and into the upper 90 of the goal.

Physicists were flabbergasted. Nike acted quickly to replace Cristiano Ronaldo with Salcedo, via photoshop, in all of their adverts.

Most of the supporters in the attendance still had their jaws on the floor when La Puerta resumed with their short-short-long pass game.  The intelligent play and communication of Prof. Matt Riordan and JP Amick helped to catch the opposition strikers offsides, time after time.

Meanwhile, Chandler Wagner was enjoying his offensive freedom on the left flank, and didn’t let his opportunity go to waste.  Wagner took a wonderful free kick that beat everyone to the back post, but it lacked a finish.

Wagner would replicate his cross, this time from open play, and this time Schlott would make sure it counted.  Schlott sacrificed his body, and future generations of Lil’ Schlotts, to put United up 2-0.

The second half looked less like a game, and more like a war-zone.

United would enjoy the help of the wind, but see even less of the ball.  Tackles were followed by elbows, which were followed by dives, which lead to ugly football.

With three quarters of the game gone, La Puerta would ensure the battle went to the final whistle.  Miscommunication and slow reaction time let La Puerta score the easiest of tap-ins from a cheap free-kick.

United dug in, however, and showed their determination, skill, and class as they shut the game down until the final whistle. Lead by JP Amick in the second half, the defense suffocated the La Puerta threat and won another 3 points for the Brews.

After the game, manager Johnny Ferraro said, “It was great to see another side of this United team. When playing the sleek, sexy, passing football wasn’t working for us, we dug in and worked hard. We grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck, and left with a W.”

Man of the Match honors went to JP Amick for his outstanding leadership and play, even when paired with a different center-back partner every 5 mintues.  He was awarded a pair of black socks, so he actually looks like a part of the team.

United will face off against another unknown opponent, in the Arlington Comets.  This will be United’s hardest test to date. The Comets have scored 18 goals in their first 3 games, and this will be their only fixture against United this season.

United fly high as Chaos Crash

FWISD #1- Rahr United took to the field, looking to avenge the thrashing of last season when the Whites could only field 7 players.  Player/Manager Johnny Ferraro made it clear that he was not going to show FC Chaos any mercy after he suggested the opponents either find alternate shirts, or forfeit the game.

Repeating the game plan from the previous week, United spent most of the first half playing keep-away from Chaos.  They dictated the rhythm straight from the kick-off, and it
wasn't long until United had the lead.

The Chaos netminder added to the trend of calamitous goalkeepers this week when he made hard work of a tame shot. United's Charlie Schlott was quick to react and tucked the ball into the back of the net to get United off the mark.

United would not take long to double their lead. Schlott turned provider for midfield maestro, Garrett Horvath. Horvath hit a clean volley
from the top of the box to get his account started with United.

With the 2-0 lead, things got tighter in the middle of the park. United were dominating the middle, but couldn't get the ball into their attacking third.

Abraham Ademola helped change up the point of attack, whipping in cross after cross from the right flank. Schlott would grab his brace after putting his head onto one
of those crosses

3-0 to the good, the defense made sure that the strong wind would not help Chaos back into the game. The fullbacks were contesting every ball in the air and
did well to work the ball out of the back, even when Chaos were pressing high.

The game would become more physical after Johnny Ferraro tried to cut someones leg off from the halfway line.

The half would end, but not before Goalkeeper Estevan Cruz made a highlight save on a shot that was in danger of entering his 6 yard box.

The 2nd half would kick off much like the previous week. United looked listless. Whether it was complacency with the scoreline, or a beating from the heat,
United looked nowhere near their best.

The highlight of the second half was when Ademola got hit by the pain train. Before he could even drag his limp body off the field, his replacement had already been
subbed in.

The game would end with United's defense earning their first clean sheet of the season.  With news filtering in that the Wanderers v. Fat Tire and La Puerta Hermosa v.
Comets game both ended in draws, Rahr United lead the league by 2 points.

United Skunk Fat Tire in Season Opener

FWISD #3 -
Another "Battle of the Beers" took place with a new-look Rahr United. Only six of the 21-man squad player/manager Johnny Ferraro assembled were a part of last season's nightmare.

Any worries about a repeat of last season were quickly put to rest after 10 minutes when Mike Salcedo gave United the lead. Starting from the back, United used slick passing to lull Fat Tire to sleep. A pass into the box left Salcedo with only the keeper to beat.

Fat Tire would find no love as the monster of midfield, Martin Cleworth, lead by example, suffocating any player in a green shirt with the ball. Cleworth was quick to show he was more than just a defensive destroyer when he scored from 20 yards out. The 2nd goal of the game nearly broke the crossbar.

After the water break, and a wave of substitutions, United showed no signs of letting up.

Charlie Schlott would make amends for missing a golden one-on-one chance, by slotting home from the spot, putting United 3-0 up.

Cody "Super Glue" Yarborough made it 4-0 from his new right back position with a phenomenal effort. Yarborough launched an effort from the halfway line that Fat Tire's keeper couldn't cope with.

Fat Tire found a goal right before the half-time whistle as the defense in white fell asleep.

The second half would look like a completely different game.

Fat Tire won a penalty in the early stages after Cedric Goddervrind was judged to have brought down a player in the box. In all fairness to Goddervrind, the penalty would have looked soft in a U-6 girls league.

United Goal Keeper, Estevan Cruz, would keep his 100% penalties conceded record as Fat Tire found their second.

After some comical efforts, William Wennerth put United 5-2 to the good. At times in the second half it looked like United had trouble finding the goal posts, let alone the back of the net.

Midway through the second, a push in the back saw threw centreback JP Amick off balance and allowed Fat Tire another chance. The forward in green lobbed the ball over Cruz, who was too eager in waiting for a back pass before the push.

Many United die-hards had flashbacks to last season, when both fixtures had last minute equalizers.

Luckily this Rahr United squad showed their resilience and held on for the first 3 points of the season.

Man of the Match: Martin Cleworth - His tough-tackling and superb goal set the standard.

Mutiny Make United Walk the Plank

Rolling Hills - Round 3 of the season saw Rahr United take on Mutiny.  The hostility of the match has
wanned considerably from the Novus vs. Makeshift days, but it was an important game

nonetheless.

Player/Manager Jake Bailey sent United out in a more attacking 3-4-3 formation, knowing
the team were in desperate need of a win.  And while the strategy of pressing high, clogging
the midfield, and creating chances worked, the final ball was missing.

Mutiny were limited with their time on the ball, but they made the most of their chances.
Thomas Eatherly, a member of the United team that won Div. 2, got  Mutiny off the mark,
after a slight tug on defender Cody Yarborough earned Eatherly a one-on-one on goal.
Eatherly deftly dribbled around goalkeeper Estevan Cruz and slotted the ball home.

United perservered however, as their style of play was still creating plenty of chances in their
attacking third. In the second half, Mutiny benefitted from lack of communication in the United
defense.   After a failed clearance from a long throw, a Mutiny player found enough time in the
box to send in a slow, floating cross that eluded the center backs and Cruz. (Seriously,
it looked like a balloon floating into space.)

The 2-0 scoreline clearly frustrated United, as their play became more physical
until the final whistle. At the end of the day a hard lesson was learned: Make your chances
count.

United look to turn the corner with their next game, this Sunday, against FC Chaos.

Blitzkrieg Bop United to the Tune of 4-0

Rolling Hills- Record amounts of snow saw the roof cave in at the Rahr & Sons Brewery this past week.  No
one really saw a correlation until Rahr United faced Blitzkrieg.

Even without their goal-scoring sensation, Cesar Escobar, Rahr United had a promising start, controlling the tempo of the game
with slick passes along the ground. Not getting to see a lot of the ball,  Blitzkrieg seemed content with a long-ball
game plan.

Led by sweeper Cody Yarborough, the United defense used the offsides trap to great affect, stifling the attack
of the former Premier League players.

While the Brews did enjoy lengthy spells of possession in the middle of the park and the outside flanks, they were
lacking an attacking threat on goal. Blitzkrieg showed their Premier League pedigree by notching the first goal after nearly
20 minutes without the ball.  A mishit clearance fell perfectly to Blitzkrieg's left-winger who eagerly finished his chance at
goalkeeper Estevan Cruz's near post.

Blitzkrieg then lived up to their name as their steadfast belief in their "hoof-it" system started to pay
dividends. Two more errant clearances and the goal they actually earned had Blitzkrieg on top 4-0 at the half.

Player/Manager Jake Bailey took some pressure of the Brews during the team talk.  Instead of getting frustrated and trying
to rally for a comeback from a 4-goal deficit, the plan was to continue to play the same and just concentrate on winning the half.

With the pressure off,  the whites went back out and battled valiantly  but
without an out-and-out attacking threat, the score remained 4-0.

Rahr United look forward to rebounding next week, with a six-pointer against familiar foes, Mutiny.

Fat Tire leaves United with Bad Taste in their Mouth.
*Report*

Rolling Hills - The "Battle of the Beers" marked the beginning of Rahr United's Spring 2010 campaign, and after a complete squad overhaul, big things were expected.

The sloppy pitch and cold weather did little to keep the heat off of Fat Tire however, as United pressured
them into  making mistakes. Once Fat Tire realised they could not establish any possession, they resorted
to long-balls.  Sweeper Cody Yarborough marshalled the United defense well, catching the opposition
offsides time and time again.

A sign of things to come, Fat Tire would catch a break to open the scoring.  A wayward cross from the right
flank found defender Matthew Winn's arm as he tried to collect possession.  The referee did not hesitate
to point to the spot, and Fat Tire did not hesitate to accept their gift, taking a 1-0 lead.

United were quick to reply when midfielder Brad Liddle picked up the ball in the center of the
park and let rip from 30 yards out to find upper 90.

Most of the first half continued to take place in United's attacking-third with slick passing between
Edgar Salas, Jared Turner, and Cesar Escobar. The Brews would gain the lead when Salas found
Kyle Wilbur before the end of the half.

In the second half, United looked to pick up where they left off.  Playing almost exclusively on the ground,
United had Fat Tire's defense at 6's and 7's. The only thing keeping Fat Tire in the game was United's
lack of lethal finishing.

While United were busy establishing their class, Escobar put on a dribbling clinic.  Finding the ball at the
top of the area, the no. 9 slalomed through Fat Tire's defense and netted United's third.

The Brews didn't have long to celebrate though, as the momentum swiftly turned in favor of Fat Tire.
A deflection from Johnathan Ferraro  at the halfway line was curiously ruled as a back-pass to the keeper.
Though Fat Tire failed to capitalise from the resulting free kick they kept the pressure on.

With roughly 20 minutes to play, Fat Tire found another gift to be accepted on the left flank. Fat Tire's pacy
right winger pounced on  a mistake and did not hesitate to burst into the box and claim Fat Tire's second.

Fat Tire would again get the rub of the green after one of their forwards found himself played in one-on-one
with keeper Estevan Cruz after a mis-kicked clearance.  Cruz's hesitation to challenge the forward allowed
the ball to beat  him. Fortunately sweeper Cody Yarborough  was there to clear the ball off the line. Yarborough
left little question as to who the man of the match was, when seconds later he jumped in front of a shot,
kicking into touch.

Unfortunately, the resulting corner worked to Fat Tire's advantage.  Fat Tire packed the box and, after some roughing-up
shook Cruz, found the easiest of equalizers.

Though the game was not lost, Rahr United knew they had lost two points in the final minutes.

After the game Manager/Right back James Bailey said,"That was (expletive) miserable! We need a right
back. I am not ever playing right back again!"

United look to rebound with their next match against TCU on Valentine's Day (weather permitting.)

Rahr United Calm the Chaos

After weathering their own internal chaos after last week's defeat (chaos that included the sacking of a new manager after only 1 game in charge), Rahr United took to the field for a 3.15 kick-off. Knowing that the fixtures list had been unkind to them, the Brews knew what was needed of them to survive in Division 1.

United started out really well, using possession within the back and midfield to wear down the starting 9 of FC Chaos, occassionaly slicing the odd pass through the heart of their defense.  A couple of times, these slicing passes found the Chaos Keeper shaky and United finally took advantage when Lukasz Gorecki found the ball and poked it home some 10 minutes into the opening half.

While reinforcements were still dressing for Chaos, the middle Gorecki found himself one-on-one with the keeper again, and scored in similar fashion.  His celebration cries of "Hat-trick, babeh!" seemed a little premature with 3/4 of the game still to play, but apparently Lukasz knew something nobody else did.

As the game wore on, Chaos created some chances of their own with some fluke clearances and loose defense.  Thankfully Grzegor Gorecki was in top form, doing everything but cartwheels to keep United ahead in the game.  Unfortunately Chaos got the chance they needed after an error gifted them a one-on-one to convert. Ernie Johnson would rev the Brews back up with wonderfully-taken goal but the opposing team was far from giving up.

The game went to half-time with United ahead 3-2 and the rain pouring down.  The interval was cut short so the teams could try and squeeze a full game out instead of having another one called due to the weather. The second-half began just as the first-half ended, with both teams battling it out to win the ball and possession.  Chaos kept asking questions of the United defense, and the oldest Gorecki kept providing answers in the forms of saves. Midway through the second half Lukasz Gorecki finished off his hat trick, this time with a shot that took a little more effort from a little farther out.  The Polish international's hat-trick was a great way to answer his critics who claimed he would be better utilized in the back field.

Chaos found another crack in the United defense, this time via a quickly taken free kick.  At 4-3 though, the Brews showed their composure and team spirit by rallying for yet another goal.

Mike Ritchey latched on to a through ball that found him alone with the opposing keeper.  The keeper, outside of his box, made a sliding tackle which rebounded to Jared Turner, who calmly lobbed the ball into the empty net.

United's defense used their physical presence to frustrate FC Chaos and hold out for a 5-3 victory.

Brews toast first point

Rahr United celebrated their first point on the season this Sunday afternoon with a 2-2 draw against Dillos. The starting lineup for United looked a little different as a new formation was tried out. The change, suggested by Steven “Cruz” Cruz, was made by Manager Greg Gorecki in an attempt to produce more offence. For the time being, it seems to have worked. Aside from a large increase in the number of good scoring opportunities, United had it’s first multi-goal match of the season.

United showed increased resiliency and determination in this match by responding to goals from Dillos, with goals of their own. After going down 1-0, Antonio Vallencia found himself open of the left wing for an overlapping run that gave him loads of space. After receiving the ball he sent a driven shot into the back of the net. After again falling down by a goal 2-1, United returned the gesture once more. Luis Flores, on the counter attack went wide down the right side opening up space for forward Lukasz Gorecki. After a good feed from Ernie Johnson, Lukasz scored leveling the match at 2-2.

That would be all the scoring for the afternoon. In the second half both sides worked hard to create chances, but neither could find the back on the net. Both Ben Osborne, and Thomas Anderson played tough, physical defense in order to help keep the score line level.

The Struggle Within

Rahr United picked up their first three points of the season this Sunday as they defeated Rahr United 7ish to 5ish. The action started early with United getting the ball in the first half. It truly seemed like their opponent was outnumbered from the start in this match. It looked as if the United players covered the whole field of play.

Rahr United jumped out to an early lead. Mike Ritchey and Ernie Johnson were able to slice right through the “Brew’s” back line for a few goals. Not to be outdone however, Rahr United struck back. Leading the charge, Austin Hart and Jared Turner moved the ball around the field well. After a few goals, including a left footed shot from Lukasz Gorecki, Rahr United pulled within one goal of Rahr United.

Various social commitments, including helping friends move, completing work around the house, and I’m tired, left both teams short for the second half. With both sides short jumbo jet sized passing lanes opened up, and so did the pace of play.

Rahr United almost lost the lead it had worked so hard for late in the game. Greg Gorecki was able to sneak past the United defense, undetected, and found himself unguarded during a corner kick. Lucky for the Brews, he the threat was thwarted.

Sunday’s action gave United it’s first three points, and once again proved the old adage; 90% of winning is just showing up. (Shameless plug for Saturday practices)

United Deported by Refugees

It has been an awkward season so far for all the teams in the FWASA with very few matches actually played. Last Sunday saw Rahr United return to the pitch after another hiatus. This time saw a rematch of the season’s first match against the Refugees. They once again proved to be too much for United, winning 6-1.

United played well in the first half, keeping the game close. Keeper Steve Robbins made some tough saves to keep the game close. A little more than midway through the half saw an Ernie Johnson goal pull United within two goals. For the next large part of the match, United stayed tough, limiting Refugees chances.

With all of this season’s matches against the Refugees behind them, the “Brews” look to bounce back strong, energized, and invigorated.
